Barkley L. Hendricks (1945–2017) revolutionized contemporary portraiture with his vivid depictions of Black subjects that emphasize the dignity and individuality of his sitters. Beginning in the late 1960s, his work drew from and challenged traditions of European art, and The Frick Collection—with its iconic portraits by Rembrandt, Bronzino, Van Dyck, and others—was one of his favorite museums.

Through a selection of some of Hendricks’s finest portraits displayed in the context of the Frick’s holdings, this exhibition celebrates and explores the remarkable work of this pioneering American painter with an unprecedented display of paintings drawn from private and public collections.

A perfect bar corner. Christopher Boffoli’s "Bourbon Technicians" adds a layer of intrigue and humor in this client’s bar.

Christopher Boffoli’s “Big Appetite” photography series combines miniature, hand-painted figurines with staged arrangements of food and beverages to create clever vignettes. Inspired by an unusual combination of magazine food photography and the 18th Century fable “Gulliver’s Travels,” Boffoli explores how inverting the proportions of people and their surroundings creates unexpected points of interest. These creative scenes evoke an uncanny likeness to the world at large.

Cruz Ortiz is an American Contemporary Artist who uses multiple mediums examining connections to nature, hope, healing, beauty, endurance, and the cosmos. He uses bold graphic screen prints, figurative abstract portraiture, dream-like landscape paintings, temporal guerrilla installations, utilitarian machines, hand carved wood sculptures, large scale public art, video, and performance art. He is interested in the exhausting narratives searching for love and the sense of home land. Ortiz is constantly working in the studio, jumping from traditional studio methods such as painting and sculpture to commercial printmaking and print design projects.

Carlos Cruz-Diez’s vivid studies of color, light, pattern, and perception helped pioneer kinetic and Op art. The artist drew on the Pointillist techniques of Georges Seurat and the color theories of Josef Albers to produce neon-hued linework and gridded compositions that appear to shift and vibrate. Cruz-Diez made prints, paintings, and installations throughout his career, extending his methods to large-scale and experiential works.

#C2Installs // A #MaraHeld perfectly placed in a client’s dining room. Held is known for energetic yet delicate paintings on linen and paper depicting lyrical organic forms in vibrant colors. Her intricate line work and patterning evoke varied sources from plant life growing on ancient forest floors or pelagic forms found in coral reefs to Japanese woodcuts and Psychedelic posters. Held’s preferred medium is egg tempera, a painstaking technique mastered by Renaissance painters.
